Character limits by platform
What is a character counter?
A character counter is a tool that counts how many characters are in your text in real time. Social media platforms like X, Instagram and LinkedIn each enforce a maximum length — a character counter lets you check your caption before you post so it doesn't get cut off or rejected.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free. No account, no sign-up, no ads. Type or paste your text and the count updates instantly in your browser — nothing is sent to any server.
Why do character limits matter?
Each platform enforces its own limit. Exceed it and your post is rejected or silently truncated. Knowing the limit in advance — especially when cross-posting the same caption to X (280), Bluesky (300) and LinkedIn (3,000) at once — saves you from rewriting at the last minute.
Which platforms does this support?
X (280), Bluesky (300), Mastodon (500), Threads (500), Pinterest (500), Instagram (2,200), TikTok (2,200), LinkedIn (3,000), YouTube (5,000), DEV.to (5,000) and Facebook (10,000). Tap any platform logo in the counter above to see how your text measures up against its limit.
What is the X (Twitter) character limit?
X allows up to 280 characters per post. URLs, even long ones, count as 23 characters each. Replies, quotes, and threads each get their own 280-character limit.
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters. However, the feed truncates captions after the first 3 lines (roughly 125 characters) — write your hook first.
What is the LinkedIn post character limit?
LinkedIn allows up to 3,000 characters for personal posts. Articles have a separate, much larger limit. Posts over ~210 characters get a "see more" cutoff in the feed.
What is the Bluesky character limit?
Bluesky posts are limited to 300 characters. Links are shortened in the display but count towards your character total based on their actual length.
What is the Threads character limit?
Threads allows up to 500 characters per post. You can add multiple media attachments alongside your text.
What is the Mastodon character limit?
The default Mastodon limit is 500 characters, though individual servers can raise or lower this. Content warnings count toward the same limit.
What is the TikTok caption character limit?
TikTok captions support up to 2,200 characters. Hashtags within your caption count toward this total.
What is the Facebook post character limit?
Facebook allows up to 10,000 characters for posts — far more than most platforms. Feed posts longer than ~477 characters get a "see more" link.
What is the YouTube description character limit?
YouTube video descriptions can hold up to 5,000 characters. Only the first 2–3 lines (about 100 characters) are visible before the "Show more" button.
What is the Pinterest pin description limit?
Pinterest pin descriptions can be up to 500 characters. The feed shows roughly the first 50 characters, so lead with the most important information.
